Photogenetic Drafts (1991)
Joachim Schmid’s series Photogenetic Drafts consists of panels of 32 b/w prints (37 x 28 cm each) of portraits created from two different negatives. These photo-collage compositions were made from ‘broken photographs’; a studio photographer discarded certain images and cut up his negatives to prevent their future use. Schmid has used these negatives to recreate other harmonious portraits of non-existing persons, in which the artist is questioning gender, aging and identity.
Archiv (1986–1999)
Archiv (1986–1999) is an image archive which consists of 726 panels measuring 40 x 50 cm each. Each panel contains between 2 and 60 recycled photographs, grouped by similarity criteria. In this context, there are groups of portraits of actors, portraits of anonymous people, couples, mothers and babies, as well as groups of animals and food, buildings and images of some of the most important monuments around the world.
